From the MAGIC President...
Welcome! Let's learn a bit about MAGIC...
As MAGIC President(2011), I would like to welcome you to our organization. Volunteering with the outstanding Board of Directors is a rewarding experience. You can make MAGIC a better organization, today. Just by being here, you have taken the first step. If you have not joined already, consider doing so, soon. Our membership fees help fuel one of the best ongoing GIS educational experiences in the region -- MAGIC Eduational Monthly meetings and our Annual GIS Day Conference proceedings.
Since 2003, MAGIC has grown in influence in the area. We have sponsored numerous educational events, presentations, panel discussions, etc. Our members participate in Job Fairs, and local area school "Career Day" events. Our members teach GIS in area post-secondary schools and have helped teach Geography teachers to use GIS technology in the classroom. Our annual conference consistently draws over 150 attendees each year. The GIS talent in the Memphis area is impressive. We have Past-Presidents from the private sector, Fisher & Arnold (Vic Young - 2004), Chamber of Commerce (Della Adams - 2005), Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division (Rick Wery - 2006), neighboring Mississippi municipal fire department (Ronny Blackburn - 2007), local municipal planner (Rick Stieg - 2008), neighboring Tipton County GIS Director (Shawn Anderson - 2009), and a University of Memphis Associate Professor (Esra Ozdenerol - 2010).
Our mission to promote GIS educational opportunities in the MidSouth Region improves all of our communities. Our members served on Mayoral Blue Ribbon committees to improve E911 response, foster a commitment to sharing knowledge, best practices and engage in data sharing for the benefit of all. Your experiences with MAGIC Members, Board of Directors, volunteers, sponsors and presenters will be positively - MAGIC! (I couldn't resist.)
